JOB SUMMARY

As the Principal Backend Engineer, you will be the most senior figure in the backend engineering team, responsible for leading the development, scalability, and security of our digital news publishing platform. Your expertise in WordPress VIP, full-stack technologies, and digital media platforms will be crucial in driving our technology strategy and ensuring our platform meets the highest standards of performance and reliability.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

• Lead the backend development team, setting technical standards and ensuring adherence to best practices for scalable and secure applications.

• Design and implement robust backend architectures, focusing on high availability, low latency, and scalability, especially within the WordPress VIP environment.

• Collaborate with frontend teams, product managers, the newsroom, content products and other stakeholders to deliver cohesive and integrated solutions that enhance user experience.

• Define and enforce best practices in mobile app development, including CI/CD processes, code reviews, and automated testing.

• Drive the adoption of best practices in code quality, testing, and maintainability, ensuring the backend team's output is the highest standard.

• Oversee the integration of media players (like JW Player) and ensure seamless delivery of on-demand content, with an eye towards future live streaming capabilities.

• Contribute to strategic decisions regarding technology adoption, architecture, and backend processes, aligning them with the company's goals and industry trends.

• Mentor and guide backend engineers at various levels, fostering a culture of continuous learning and improvement.

SKILLS

• Extensive experience with WordPress VIP, deeply understanding its architecture, scalability, security, and best practices.

• Proven expertise in full-stack technologies, particularly those relevant to digital media platforms (e.g., JavaScript, Node.js, PHP, SQL databases).

• Experience designing and maintaining high-load, scalable web applications, with a track record of successful backend projects.

• Familiarity with media player technologies, on-demand content delivery, and potential live streaming solutions.

• Strong grasp of software development methodologies, particularly Agile and Scrum, with experience leading teams in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.

• Advanced knowledge of CI/CD pipelines, with the ability to design and implement efficient workflows for mobile app development.

• Proficient in cloud services and infrastructure, particularly those that enhance the scalability and resilience of digital media platforms.

• Strong leadership and team management abilities, with a track record of mentoring and developing engineers.

• Excellent communication and collaboration skills, able to work effectively in a distributed team environment and engage with stakeholders across various departments.

• Strategic thinker, capable of making high-level decisions that influence the platform's direction and success.

• Problem-solving mindset, with a proactive approach to identifying and addressing challenges in a timely manner.

EXPERIENCE

• Minimum of 8+ years of experience in backend development, with at least 5 years in a senior or leadership role.

• Previous experience in digital media platforms, particularly in the business and finance sector, is highly desirable.

• Demonstrated experience in a Principal or similar leadership role within engineering, overseeing significant projects and teams.
